No more 'Lil Princess'. And it's Valentine's Day!

If you have been following my blog for more than 2 years, you should know that I used to have a nick 'Lil Princess', and even to the extent of including it in my blog URL for my previous blog. And of which, I was ever featured and interviewed in The Sunday Times newspapers, TODAY newspapers, magazines, etc, based on my previous blog.

And this article was found in the
Malaysian newspaper publication: The Star. (15/Aug '06).

Well, there's more, but just that I don't have the soft copies.

So anyway, despite the extensive use of the term 'Princess' years ago... I outgrew this nick and stopped calling myself 'Princess' in any sort of situations to whoever or whatever, in the recent one or two years.


I mean, it will be nice to be my boyfriend's Princess... Why not? It certainly feels so sweet and loving, and feel so precious like to be his Precious Lil One whom he will love, dote and protect. But to be called a Princess at the age of 40 in future? Hello.... I should be called a 'Matriarch' or 'Queen' by then (if so I wish to be called something)! Thus, that was why the 'Princess' nick thingy kinda took a backseat. I'd rather be called 'My Lady', or 'My Highness'~~~ :p


When I was out for dinner and drinks last week, I came across a porcelain mug which I was instantly attracted to - Not for the color or design, but for the wordings, as seen in the picture below.

The words 'Formerly Princess' were what that caught my attention.
It was really something that I could really relate to.
And thus I really felt strongly that this mug was totally apt for me!

So I had to have it!

And also bought a diamond-encrusted cup cover that sticks to the mug tightly.

I think that the mug and cover fits perfectly for each other.
The combination of both made it looked so pretty, dainty and girlish.
I wouldn't insist on being hailed as a 'Goddess' by my Special Someone...
But being regarded as his Goddess, wouldn't be a bad idea! :p


So there you go... My new drinking mug for myself when I am in the office. :)

So I called the Police...

One day, I was in a cab traveling to my destination along the CTE. Out of a sudden, I saw a motorcyclist fell off from his bike and his bike skidded on the road. Thankfully, the car that was behind of him was not driving too fast on the highway. Otherwise, the driver would have hit him.

But why did the motorcyclist fall?


So this was what happened:
A lorry driver probably did not check his side mirror (Irresponsible!) and simply filtered right to the middle lane. The bike 'kissed' the back of the lorry and fell. The biker laid there in pain, injured, probably with a fractured arm. But the lorry driver did not know anything... Or perhaps he knew... I was not sure. BUT he drove off.


When I saw how the biker fell, I shouted "Oh My God!". Those words of shock came out of nowhere but it was simply a natural reaction of mine. I mean, afterall, I am a pillion rider at times... I wouldn't want anything to happen to my biker or me. Right? Luckily, a police car was entering into the CTE from Balestier Road and stopped to help the injured rider.


But it shocked me that the lorry drove off... Just like that!!?


So when my cab driver drove further down along the highway and I spotted that idiotic lorry had stopped at the side, I got my driver to stop the cab. A car had already stopped there too. Apparently, that car driver witnessed the accident and chased after the lorry driver to get the latter to stop. They were arguing and the lorry driver maintained that he did not cause the accident.


I was furious! Even if he felt that he did not knock the biker directly, he should at least stopped to check on him. I shouted, "WHY ARE YOU QUARRELING HERE WHEN YOU SHOULD BE CHECKING ON THE BIKER?!!". I got into a shouting match with him when he kept insisting that it was not his fault. I was rabid, alright...


I don't know what came over me, but I simply opened the cab door and aimed my camera at his lorry and vehicle plate number to take a picture (as seen below). Thinking back, it was rather dangerous that I did that. He was quite near me so he could have easily snatched my phone and throw it towards the road!




Afterwhich, I got back to the cab and asked the cab driver to drive off. Awhile later, I called '999' and reported the case. I described the physical appearance of the lorry driver and told the police the vehicle plate number. Awhile later, a Traffic Police officer and also an I/O from Tanglin called me for more information regarding the accident.


I hoped that the lorry driver would be brought in for questioning.
I am not sure what happened after that day... But I really hope that the biker is alright.


For all these years, it scares me whenever I witness any bike accidents.
The bike accidents that I usually see were those that had already happened... Simply means that the biker was either:
- Already sitting by the road side hugging his injured body part
- Being carried into the ambulance
- Or the worst scenario, already covered in that white cloth (May God bless your soul.)


So this was my first time that I really witnessed a bike accident, right before my eyes.


I have 2 scar marks from the bike's exhaust pipes from many years ago. But that's nothing.
I have friends who got injured while riding bike. Metal pieces inserted into their bodies.
I know of someone who passed away from a bike accident, and he was only 23 years old.


Riding is dangerous. Because drivers don't usually give a hoot about bikers.
And this is one thing I simply detest.


Not many people know, but I actually did went for motorcycle lessons.
Nothing could deter me from doing that.
I really love feeling the wind coming towards me as I ride.
The thought of owning and riding a Vespa is something that I always wished for.
But I stopped.


By the way, whatever we do is dangerous. Not just by riding a bike.
One can simply die by choking on a fish bone or while crossing the road.
If a car is safer than a bike, imagine the scenario where one is stuck in the car and is unable to escape out of it before the car explodes....

Shopping! Singapore Presidential Election! NATAS Fair! 2011

The past 2.5 weeks were really busy for me - I went to Bangkok and Taipei, and just last weekend I had a staycation at Quincy Hotel. And just this evening, a short holiday getaway for the long weekend was planned, and with bookings/payments made. Supposedly to have the trip from Sunday onwards, it was pushed forward to Saturday (which is tomorrow!). So after I cast my vote for the Singapore Presidential Election 2011 tomorrow morning, I will be heading off! A last-minute plan, but I am VERY excited! (^_^)


But no matter how busy I might have been, I was still able to shop online. And these were what I bought:

The NATAS Fair 2011 is also happening during this weekend. Since I will be out of Singapore, I will miss this travel fair. Supposedly thought of going down as I wanted to see if there is any good deals ofr a year-end trip. Oh well~ :)

MM Lee Kuan Yew and SM Goh Chok Tong to step down from Cabinet.

After a week since the recent 2011 election, an official joint statement by MM Lee and SM Goh was released:

"We have studied the new political situation and thought how it can affect the future. We have made our contributions to the development of Singapore. The time has come for a younger generation to carry Singapore forward in a more difficult and complex situation. The Prime Minister and his team of younger leaders should have a fresh clean slate. A younger generation, besides having a non-corrupt and meritocratic government and a high standard of living, wants to be more engaged in the decisions which affect them. After a watershed general election, we have decided to leave the cabinet and have a completely younger team of ministers to connect to and engage with this young generation in shaping the future of our Singapore.

But the younger team must always have in mind the interests of the older generation. This generation who has contributed to Singapore must be well-looked after."

They are going to step down from the Cabinet, to have the younger ones to take over. Shocking news to me... But will the younger team of ministers be able to connect and engage well with the younger generation (probably the ages of 35 and below)?. For myself, so far I have not been able to find a Cabinet minister which I find that I can connect well to. Despite the 'threat' that MM Lee made during the recent election campaign to the Aljunied GRC residents which infuriated many, I have to add that he has done a great job all these years, especially during the early years of Singapore.

More than just a technology leader: Apple Inc. (Japan)

You know, regarding this earthquake that occurred on 11 March... A day before that, I woke up after having a dream about Japan. And that afternoon itself, I had lunch at Sushi Tei. I can't imagine that the earthquake and tsunami happened a day after. :(


And on that same week of the earthquake, my favorite Uncle and Aunty was supposed to go for a holiday in Tohoku. But my Aunt decided to postpone the trip as her company has to do stock-take that week. If they had gone, their holiday trip will stretch past 11 March and something could have happened to them.


My sis flew off to Hong Kong on 11 March itself in the early morning. By right, she wanted to go to Tokyo but felt that 4 days (Friday-Monday) in Tokyo is not enough, as she couldn't get away longer than that due to work, so she switched her holiday destination to Hong Kong. Imagine if my Uncle, Aunty and sis had gone ahead with their initial plan? *horrors*


As much as I am relieved that they did not go to Japan, daily news reports and pictures of the aftermath are heart-wrenching enough that I cringed while reading/looking at them. :( Of course, there are the stories of the brave rescue teams who put in all their effort to search for surviving victims, for example... With this being said, I would like to share with you [this blog post] by Kevin Rose, who blogged about how Apple Inc. (Japan) had contributed in more ways than they should! Apple had shown that they are more than just a Mac... iPhone... iPad... Ok, I shall stop, you get my drift~ :)

Sushi Tei Fundraising Effort for Japan's Earthquake

My family's favorite Japanese casual restaurant chain, Sushi Tei, came up with a way to raise funds to help Japan after the devastating earthquake which occurred a fortnight ago...


From now till 01 April 2011, 100% of sale proceeds from this dish, Salmon Wafuu Carpaccio will be donated to Singapore Red Cross Society for the Japan's Earthquake Relief Efforts.

And for food import from Japan, you should know how strict Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) is, so there is nothing you have to worry with regards to the radiation level in the food. Even after the tsunami, I still went to Sushi Tei for a meal... Last Tuesday, I think. :)

Of Japan Earthquake, Tsunami and to eRegister with Ministry of Foreign Affairs

When Japan was hit with an earthquake of a 7.2 magnitude on Wednesday (09 March 2011), I was worried but I managed to contact my friend who was in Hiroshima, who told me that the earthquake was not very obvious, almost to the point that nothing much can be felt.


Although earthquakes occur in Japan rather frequently, but this quake lasted longer than usual... And due to this earthquake, the authorities issued a warning of an upcoming Tsunami. But till 10 March, there was no sign of the tsunami (not that I was looking forward to it), and I felt so relieved.


But then, on Friday afternoon (11 March), something bad happened... A 8.9 magnitude earthquake rocked the northeastern part of Japan which triggered a devastating tsunami that sent 10-metres high waves towards the land. It was quite scary to see a news video footage online, where muddy waves carried cars and even BOATS with it, and moving towards the land in Sendai, wreaking houses and engulfing rice fields in the process.


The earthquake is considered the world's 5th largest one since 1900 and the biggest earthquake in Japan for the past 140 years! Trains, buses and flights are issued to stop operations, but a train carrying passengers was reported missing... :( Due to this Japan quake, it has shifted the Earth's axis of rotation by 10cm. Well, the change is not noticeable, but it is permanent - A day is getting shorter, and not as if there are enough hours in a day currently for us to do whatever we need to. A worrying issue indeed...

And with such a devastating natural disaster event that had just occured, let's all #prayforjapan. Hope that most of them will be fine and have their lives be back to normal as soon as possible. And of which, I feel it is a suitable time for me to mention something important that will be good for all to know... (Read on)

I always stress the importance of doing an eRegistration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) before one travels out of Singapore. It is a voluntary and free service where you eRegister your travel details on the webpage, just in case of any crisis in the country you are traveling to. They will know where you are staying in which country and city, which will come in useful should the country you are heading to experience a natural disaster event, civil unrest, etc... I always eRegister before I go for all my travel trips (except one-day trips to JB though). Oh, and I will also have the contact details of the Singapore embassies in the countries I visit to on hand.


Call me paranoid, but it only takes a few minutes to note down the embassies contact details, as well as to register yourself and your travel mates, so why not? I ever mentioned about this eRegister service in an entry in my (previous) blog, and have even created a link which was easier to remember, that direct one straight to the webpage to eRegister...

Natas Fair 2011, Singapore Expo. Tour Packages.

From what I gathered from the news, it seemed that many queued up even before Natas Fair 2011 opened its doors this morning. Natas Fair is the highly-anticipated travel fair that is held twice yearly in Singapore.


Travellers these day are so savvy that they had probably done their homework and know what, where and who to book from, for their upcoming travel trips. For myself, I know I am not planning any trips from now till June but I take great interest in this fair (till Sunday, 27 Feb) as it gives me an idea of the various tour itineraries offered by the travel agencies, the possibility that I may be able to travel out of Asia if my plans are done up properly and in advance (of course I have to consider the misc fees too), and not to forget, the amount I have to be prepared to fork out when I visit the second Natas fair of the year.


With travel information being able to be retrieved from the Internet easily, some may choose not to go with tour groups. I am not against tour groups, however I do feel that it will be better if one extends a trip if one has the financial means and time to do so - See more of that country, experience the local way of living and take a slower pace to explore that foreign place that one is in. In the past few years, I have gone on tour groups, as well as free & easy holidays. Both have their pros and cons, if you know what I mean. I shall not elaborate much as I have a feelin' that I will have LOTS to talk about, but...


For tour group packages, some may compare based on prices, and simply book with the agency that offers the cheaper price. This should be avoided, unless you are really on a budget. Then again, if you are on a budget, go elsewhere that is cheaper or don't even go anywhere at all so that you can start saving for that ultimate trip, right? Anyway, as I was saying... Price is not everything as it is always best to know the type of hotels that they will put you up in, the number of places to visit, etc.


Most importantly, read the itineraries carefully, to see whether [FOR EXAMPLE] it is a "drive past the Eiffel Tower and admire this global icon of France" or it is a "ascend the Eiffel Tower and admire the beauty of Paris from this global icon of France". And even if it is the latter, you have to know whether you will be going to the 1st or/and 2nd floor of the tower, or to the summit as well.


The 2 ticket types differs by only 5 euros (as of 26 Feb), but seeing Paris from the first or second étage (floor) versus admiring Paris from the summit is a whole load of difference! You want to have that unforgettable experience, don't you? Anyway that is just an example. When I went for a tour, the tour bus simply drove past a historical building that had great meaning. Maybe to most people, it is not a significant monument as compared to the Great Wall of China, but wouldn't it be nice to get upclose with it? Le sigh.


Of course, I have experienced some great group tours led by experienced tour leaders. And do you know there are some views that if one wants to visit X country under tour package, it is best to go to X agency, and one should go to Y agency if one wants to visit Y country? This is based on the expertise and focus of the respective agencies, you see... Which I am sure you already know this. :)


For now, I want to work hard so that I can have a well-deserved retreat with my loved one in A/W 2011 or Spring 2012 (no matter where it is, I will be just as glad to spend the time with him, seeing new sights and gaining new experiences). Afterwhich, it will be time to save more for something bigger, something that is of a life-changing event. Or maybe I should go somewhere nearer, and then use the whatever money saved as part of the 'life-changing event'? Hmmm whatever/wherever it is, I am just glad if I get to make trips outta Singapore! (^_^)

Instagram for iPhone only. Soon for Android users.

This was a phone that I received from HTC as a prize last year.
It was lovely but it was not what my type, so I gave it away.

Shortly after, I got the Apple iPhone 4 for myself via the Apple Store (that was in Aug IIRC) despite that I have ever declared that I will never own an Apple product. Ironic, isn't it? :X But well, I was won over by the slim and sleek design and how well it fits into a small clutch purse or my jeans pocket, and also by the nifty camera. These are basically what I need from my phone - Good camera and slim in size.


Ever since then, I have not regretted getting the iP4. What's more, Bbb also ordered the phone together with me! Despite being together for the few years, and changing phone models every year or so, we have never gotten the same phone model but only same phone brand... But FINALLY, we have our set of "couple phones". *HEH* Not that we got the iP4 on purpose, but just that he wanted that too. :)


Why I posted the picture as seen above was because I found it in one of my older draft posts, so I decided to post it up (don't let it go to 'waste'). My purpose of this blog entry is not about the iP4 since it is rather common already. But to share with you an awesome free app which I am currently addicted to.

It is.... INSTAGRAM!

Currently, the Instagram app is made available worldwide but only for iPhone users. I came across tweets from some friends who lamented about not being able to use this wonderful app as they are Android users. Which I would like to say, fret not, just wait for awhile more, as Instagram co-founder, Kevin Systrom, had announced that Instagram will be available to Android users... Though he did not mention the release date.


Instagram IS a phenomenon. In less than 3 months, 1 million people have registered as users. It took Foursquare and Twitter longer than that to reach to the 1 million mark. What is so great about it? What is it?


(1) You can snap a picture straight from the app and upload it to your account. Alternatively, you can upload a picture from your phone's photo album. But the photo that will be uploaded is in a square format.

(2) And before you upload it, there are many different filters that you can choose to make your photo look even more awesome. Photo manipulation is now so easy and quick, even for noobs like you and me!

(3) Afterwhich, you are able to tag the location of where you are. But please refrain from tagging if you do not want to let others know your current location of where you are at the time of you uploading the picture. Even if you were to add a custom location (eg. A corridor in NEX), but at the time of posting, you are at Paragon. The map will capture your location in Paragon, not NEX. So putting a custom location is not as safe too.

(4) I like the fact that Instagram managed to add social integration with other sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Foursquare. In this way, I can share my photo uploaded onto Instagram with people in my Twitter and Facebook accounts, as long as I link my accounts in Instagram.

(5) It is a social network where one can build friendships and share photography ideas and inspirations with others. I have seen many beautiful though-provoking work of arts by some brilliant IGers, as well as many others that are humorous and light-hearted.

Keeping your Home Together, with Total Defence.

Defending Singapore is not only through serving the National Service or being in the various forces, but there are other ways in which we can defend Singapore. And we call it Total Defence, where everyone can play a part in keeping Singapore strong on all fronts.




And this year's Total Defence theme, "Home - Keeping It Together" sends a positive message of doing just that as we are the children of our motherland, no matter if we are living in Singapore or abroad. No matter where we are, there are certainly sweet cherished memories and shared dreams of the future that we have for Singapore.


I am sure you have seen the music video (as below) on the local television channels, where 39 local singers were involved in the new version of the song, "Home". The song was originally sung by Kit Chan, and was composed by Dick Lee in 1998. That was like 13 years ago (and I was still in Primary School then mann~). This new version is something refreshing, in my opinion... And something to reignite the sense of home and commitment to defend Singapore, as it is our Home.

Do your part for the people of your HOME!

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso wins Singapore Grand Prix 2010

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso wins Singapore F1 Grand Prix 2010, with an impressive start-to-finish victory! Thus, moving closer to the Formula One Championship lead. He held off Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel (who came in second) from the start to the end and I would say it was indeed a close fight between the two drivers.


It was disheartening to see Lewis Hamilton world title dreams dashed as he failed to finish due to a collision between his car and Red Bull Mark Webber's on lap 36, nearing to turn seven - Webber's car clipped Hamilton's left rear with his front right tyre, when Webber was trying to hold his inside line.

Hamilton's frustration was evident as he was forced to ditch his McLaren due to the damage and threw his steering wheel out of the cockpit. Stewards announced that the incident would be investigated, but concluded no further action was required.

Mark Webber finished third, with Jenson Button in the fourth place. Well sad to say that the driver that I have been supporting (Note: The driver, not the team), Nico Rosberg, came in fifth. Never mind, there's always next year for this suave looking driver. :p

Facebook 'Dislike' Button Scam

More than 3 million Facebook users expressed that they want to have a 'Dislike' button, on top of the 'Like' button. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the company officials would "definitely think about" adding a 'Dislike' button.


Yes, currently you can get a 'Dislike' button, but be sure to get it through the Firefox Add-ons web page, as mentioned by Cluley, a senior technology consultant with software security firm Sophos, whom had sounded the alert on his company's blog.


This was because a viral scam has been spreading on Facebook. Once granted permission to access a Facebook user's profile (since user assumes that its the usual 'access granting procedure' for Facebook apps), the application pumps out spam from the account and spreads itself by inviting the person's friends to get the button, according to Sophos.


After granting access to that fake Dislike button app, they will require you to 'share' it with your Facebook friends by posting it on your Facebook wall (and yes, that's how I got wind of the so-called Dislike button). Afterwhich, users will be forced to complete an online survey contained in the application, before they point you to a Firefox browser add-on for a "Dislike" button made by FaceMod as a Facebook add-on (which is totally lame, since you can actually get the button from the Firefox Add-ons web page).


I discovered this piece of news from a friend who sent me a private message on FB. After doing more research, yes it is indeed a scam. But guess what??? I have fallen prey to that scam too, but somehow the app 'hanged' after I clicked to post it on my Facebook wall, so I did not do any online survey at all.


But why would I want a 'Dislike' button, since wouldn't it be nice to 'like' my friends' status messages? Yes it will be nice.... But not if my friend's status message is, "So much unfinished work, I have to bring it home over the weekend to do!" or "Rolled down the hill today, broke my legs and I'm in the hospital, and no one has visited me yet.". If there are such status messages from my friends, a 'Dislike' button would be more appropriate that a 'Like' button, isn't it? :)

Samsung Human Torch Event for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games

Last Friday was a significant day as the first Youth Olympic flame was lit in an official ceremony outside the famed Temple of Hera in ancient Olympia, Greece. With that, it marks the start of the journey of the Youth Olympic flame! The flame will be carried by torchbearers, and it will make its way from Greece to Singapore, via five continents. The flame will arrive on August 05, after a 13-day journey, before it will be used to light the cauldron to mark the start of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

And to celebrate the lighting of the Youth Olympic flame in Greece, a spectacular event was organized by the International Presenting Partner of the Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame (JYOF) and Worldwide Olympic Partner - SAMSUNG.

Held at the grass field at Merchant Loop, a total of 2010 students from 6 local educational institutions gathered to form the shape of a (giant) torch. They were the human torch, which lighted up at exactly 2010hours, with the help of a battery-powered torch (looks like the Olympic torch, with flame somemore!). Please don't tell me you were expecting that 'Human Torch' was to be of humans being lighted up ok? :p

So what if its only 10% of the total number of students forming the human torch?
It wouldn't be a perfect torch formation!
So you see, every one played an important part to make this a success!

Tapas and drinks were going around the VIP tent.

The event started with speeches...

Followed by percussion band creating a loud atmosphere to warm everyone up for that exciting moment....

And a lady dressed in a mardi-gras orange costume danced to the music and beat of the percussion music...

There were some guys doing awesome capoeira moves...


Most interesting performance was by the fire blowers!

This fire blowing performance is also known as fire breathing.

Want to know how this is being done? :p
The guy holds onto a stick that is already lighted with fire.
He pours a type of flammable liquid into his mouth but not swallowing it.
Afterwhich, he promptly sprays it out towards that 'fire stick'.
And POOF! A huge ball of fire appears!


But please do not try this at home! OK?!?!
All these pros are trained under close supervision with all precautions made.

As we counted down to 2010hours, I was wondering how magnificent the whole scene would be... It was beautiful....

Sezairi Sezali performed several songs for all those present. I heard the second song that he sang that night. Anyone has any idea what was the song title???

Lotsa students went crazy over him, jumping and screaming away.
(Ok, I'd probably do that if its Lady Gaga or X Japan.)

The students practically ran towards the stagefront when the emcees (987fm DJs) invited them to, while screaming away. They must have been very happy to get upclose with the winner of the third edition of the Singapore Idol contest. :)

Had to sign an indemnity form before one goes up! Thinks its about 3 to 4 storey high.

I thought it would be awesome to view the whole site from up there...
(The white round thing at the top right of the pic below is the moon btw)



And I went up! After the lighting up though~

Sezairi Sezali was very obliging with photographs! What a lovely guy~ Other than taking group shots with two different groups of bloggers (invited from 2 diff sources, you see), he also took some shots with individuals! And that includes me. But I must wait for Leon to post up/email me the pictures first.

For this event, we were each given a goodie bag.
The very same one that the student participants received.

So there was a bottle of mineral water, a dri-fit shirt (the same one that the boy in the pic below was wearing) and a Samsung mini towel. I think whatever it was inside came in handy to the participants! :D

This is the torch that the participants used to light up!
I light up too! For Singapore! For YOG!
I'm so proud that my country is the host for the very first YOG!!

The Samsung mini towel can be used as a Samsung beauty pageant sash too! LOL!

Blue top by Club Monaco. Matches so well with Samsung's corporate color! :p
Bought it 3 mths ago, but only wore it for the first time on Saturday.
