Chap Goh Meh - Chinese Valentine's Day (元宵节)

Valentine's Day may be three days away,  but today is a day for couples to celebrate their love, for it is "Yuen Xiao" (元宵). This is the Chinese version of Valentine's Day, also known as "Chap Goh Meh" in Hokkien.


"Chap Goh Meh" marks the fifteenth night of the whole Chinese New Year period. The "Yuen Xiao" festival is also known as 'Lantern Festival'. Homes will be decorated with brightly-lit red lanterns, and people carrying lanterns on the streets, soaking in the festivity.


Most families would gather to eat together on this final day of the whole celebratory period, while the town celebrates this occasion with fireworks and firecrackers (not in Singapore, but in Malaysia at least), lanterns, lion dances and of course the Chingay procession.The Singapore Chingay will be live-streamed with repeated telecasts. For myself, I spent the afternoon with my loved one, and will be having a dinner feast with the final lou hei (yusheng) for this Lunar New Year period. I will probably end the night with a karaoke session.

Although it is not a tradition in Singapore... In some other Asian countries, on this "Yuan Xiao" day, mandarin oranges are thrown into the sea by single ladies, believing that they will find a good husband by doing so. Also, it was believed that their future spouse will be the man who picks up the orange. Since the oranges are thrown by unmarried ladies, ladies these day in this current modern era may toss oranges into the sea but not before writing their phone number or email address, or may I add Instagram handle. :p

So maybe I will toss mine into the swimming pool!

Nowadays, it is not just just the man doing the chasing. Ladies do that too. So guess what some guys do? They toss bananas into the sea, with messages or their phone numbers written on them. Hence, that's why this day is known as the "Chinese Valentine's Day"... cos of how it is related to the concept of love. Oh, and there's another day in the Lunar calendar which is considered as the Chinese Valentine's Day too - The 7th day of the 7th lunar month... It is the Qi Xi festival (七夕节) that celebrates the annual meeting of the cowherd and weaver girl in Chinese mythology.

But anyway, my opinion is that love is not to be expressed only on Valentine's Day... It should be expressed every day. It does not have to proven with a hefty price tag, but love can be shown in many sweet and simple ways. I feel that...

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Singapore (USS)

After a fruitful afternoon at the Shiseido sale and a blogger's event last Saturday, I made my way to Resort World Sentosa in the evening, on an attempt to be frightened at the Halloween Horror Night 6 (HHN) event happening at the Universal Studios Singapore (USS) theme park.

The highly-raved annual HHN had the theme park transformed into a bloodcurdling location, engulfed by horror, screams and shrieks as thrill-seekers wander into the five haunted houses filled with vengeful and creepy figures - Bodies of Work, Salem Witch House, Hawker Centre Massacre, Hu Li's Inn and Old Changi Hospital.

Despite having the express pass, there was still a long queue in the Express ticket holder lane. But still, it was better than having the normal ticket which could have one queuing up to 90 minutes just to enter into any of the houses. Braving the heat and long queue, I waited for my turn with the other four in my group to enter all five haunted houses, to get freaked out and scream our lungs away.

At certain timings, the March of the Dead - The Resurrection paraded on the streets, showcasing elaborated costumes, props and makeup held by the performers. It was quite similar to how the Day of the Dead (Dias de Muertos) is being celebrated, but only more solemn and not as festive as how it should actually be. This said festival is somewhat akin to how the Chinese sees QingMing Festival and the Seventh Month Hungry Ghost Festival as, but of happiness and celebration instead.

There are two Scare Zones - Suicide Forest and March of the Dead, where scary figures roamed around to give us the fright of our lives. But it turned out to be more of a photo opportunity location where we could take photos with or of them, haha. Photos taken below were at the March of the Dead area, where performers were decked out in calaveras makeup and Victorian costumes. I was excited to take photos of them as I have always been intrigued by the intricate design of calaveras.

The calaveras makeup clad talents were all very obliging to pose for my camera. I managed to take some photos which you can see below. The makeup and costumes were all spot-on, and the place's lighting and smoky effect brought out fantastic photographic results IMO.

When you feel that you may get a heart attack from all the scares and need to cool down, hop onto any of the available theme park attractions like the Transformers 3D battle ride, Revenge the Mummy and Battlestar Galactica - Human and Cylon roller coaster rides. Not sure if the roller coaster rides will not get your heart beating fast though... If so, better off being scared in the haunted houses, ha!

By the way, there is also the live "Jack's Recurring Nightmare Circus" performance happening daily at various timings, where audience was treated to singing, dancing, acrobatic and dangerous do-not-try-this-at-home dagger-throwing acts.

Other than the usual restaurants and food carts peppered around in USS to get your food and drinks from, check out the candy floss cart where the stick is illuminated! Also, the costly blood bag (fruit punch) and syringe drinks amidst the canned and bottled drinks.

So hurry, 'chop' your tickets and get butchered
into a whole load of thrills, shrieks, scares and laughs at

Happy (belated) 48th Birthday, Singapore!

48 years old this year, yet a young nation indeed. You came so far from a small fishing village and progressed to this unique metropolitan city which I call HOME. We try to live in harmony and understand the festivals and practices of the various races and religions of the people dwelling in this urban city. On top of that, we see immigrants from other countries coming into Singapore to build their homes here, to seek for jobs that pay better than what they can get back home, or to seek a brighter future for themselves and/or their offspring. We too, try to live cohesively with this other group of people, but sometimes it simply irks us (or me, at least), when they lack the mannerism or consideration for others (or the cleanliness, per se). 

But no matter what, this is my HOME. Even if I will not be living in Singapore for my whole life, this is where I grew up, did my studies, and started my first job at. I love the fact that food choices are aplenty here, anytime of the day or night, and they range from fine dining restaurants to hawker centres, as well as from Chinese cuisine to say, Russian cuisine. 

I love how my Singapore passport allows me to travel visa-free to more than 160 countries in the world, for XX days! We are just a small red dot but we have bilateral agreements with so many countries around the world! To be honest, I treasure my citizenship. Despite singing the praises of what this country can provide me with, I also have my own views of the political parties, which I shall not touch here. But for each GE to come, it will be very obvious of which party I support, through all the tweets where I voice my opinions. True to be told, we aren't like the older generation whereby we only listen to one voice. The younger generation of today have our own views and a clearer mind. We won't be oppressed, we will make an informed choice.

Despite the breakdowns of our buses and trains, I dare say we have a commendable transport infrastructure (unlike some cities) that connects us to most parts of Singapore. Then again, I take public buses or trains only once in a blue moon. And sadly, I have to deal with the 'kiasuism' or inconsideration of commuters each time, which completely irks me. Of course, there are some commuters who brought much amusement to us such as the dancing dude or the vulgarities-sprouting lady ,as you can see in the videos below. :p

Not forgetting our unique Singlish language! Or the fact that we can mix English, Mandarin and even Hokkien into one sentence! But do note that we are capable of speaking proper English too - It all depends on where, when and to whom. Thus, relac ah! ;)

I have been using DHC Mild Touch Cleansing Oil, and I am currently into my 2nd bottle. I use this on my medium to heavy makeup days. On my light-makeup days, I use the Biore Cleansing Oil-In Cotton sheets. I liked the fact that I can use this cleansing oil with wet hands. Usually, for most cleansing oils, it is a must to use on dry hands only. It is amazing how this cleansing oil removes all the makeup so thoroughly! Singapore Flyer's FrightFest 2012 (Media Preview)

Halloween is well over, and nope, I did not play dress-up as I was not in Singapore last weekend. But a Blogger & Media Preview with Singapore Flyer's FrightFest 2012 last month was good enough to make up for it! 

It was my 2nd time being onboard the Singapore Flyer (1st time was also for a Blogger event. click HERE to read), and I was more than happy to be up in the skies, 165m high! Especially so since I am someone who likes seeing the scenery from a high altitude as it totally marvels me alot! I was enjoying the panoramic view of the city, which includes the latest attraction place, Gardens by The Bay.

After the Singapore Flyer ride, we disembarked to head to the location for the movie-themed Halloween experience, FrightFest 2012. It was held in the garden at the Singapore Flyer building. Walking through the "Undead Forest" was frightening. I couldn't help but to anticipate which scary characters would appear out of nowhere and scare the hell out of me. I felt like I was part of various movies such as Sadako, The Maid, The Walking Dead and Friday the 13th! Check out the photos below!

After the hair-standing experience at Frightfest 2012, we went to the Singapore Flyer lounge, where we had a simple reception. We were served a chilling (No pun intended! Hehe!) cocktail which was specially prepared for this Halloween event. The longan fruit that was placed on the top of each drink really looked like a bloody eyeball!

Awhile later, the talented scare crew (Students from Singapore Polytechnic's Diploma in Integrated Projects & Event Management course) appeared for a photo session. It was great that we could see them in bright lighting finally as I was admiring the FX Makeup and their attire. They have done an overall great job!
