Together We Are Stronger. The Pink Way!

There are a lot of sports that require teamwork. For example, dragonboating. Teamwork is about supporting and watching out for each other in the team, as well as being in sync as a team. If one slackens or gives up in his/her rowing, or unable to go with the drum beat, the overall speed and strength will be weakened.

Hence, "Together we are stronger".

This whole thing about teamwork also means a lot to the breast cancer patients out there. With the encouragement and support from their loved ones, patients have the emotional strength to battle it out with this life-threatening disease.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) is an annual event held globally in the month of October. This is when Breast Cancer Awareness campaigns are carried out, as well as to draw attention and raise funds for research and effort work carried out for breast cancer treatment and prevention. You can show your support for this cause by educating your loved ones and friends - Spread the important message on early detection and breast cancer screening, for it can save lives!

Do it for yourself and your loved ones. Bring forth this awareness to even the men in your family, for they are the necessary pillar of support, especially for their female partner/family member who may have been diagnosed with breast cancer. For you see, "Together we are Stronger", and yes, it is the theme for 2014's BCAM! :)

For all that you might have already know, I have been doing the annual "Pink Fridays" routine - Where I wear the Pink Ribbon' and don PINK outfits on every Friday in the month of October!

The pink ribbon is a universal symbol for awareness and hope for breast cancer patients that they can lead normal lives after breast cancer, if detected early. Show your support and awareness by wearing the pink ribbon this month!

Where To Get the Pink Ribbon for Breast Cancer Awareness Month???

You can get a simple pink silk ribbon 
from any of the Estée Lauder makeup counters.
(This brand has been in support of this cause since the 90s, started by the late Mrs Evelyn H Lauder.)

Alternatively, make a donation of $2 to get a limited-edition Pink Ribbon pin, just like how I always did! :) The collected funds will go towards Singapore's Breast Cancer Foundation's effort of raising awareness of Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention, fund-raising activities and support group for breast cancer patients. Each year, I will match $2 for every Pink Ribbon pins that I give to my family members, close female friends, and all of my female colleagues. I hope you can do the same thing as well if you would like to help raise awareness. :)

I also briefly spoke to Ms Wong regarding this BCAM campaign and she is also one who thinks this cause, and raising awareness of it, is important. I hope that there are more people like her out there!

Treasure the BREAST Things in Life!

The Breast Cancer Awareness Talk which I attended last year made a difference in my life. I learnt how to conduct my own Breast Self-Examination and to do it regularly. Last year, I showed my support for the Pink Ribbon movement by wearing the Pink Ribbon brooch pin and dressing in pink on every Friday during the month of October.


Why October.... As  the Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) takes place every October, where Breast Cancer campaigns take place globally so as to increase public awareness of breast cancer, and to draw attention to the research and efforts being made to improve breast cancer treatment and prevention. Just so that you know, Breast Cancer is the most common cancer among women in Singapore. One in 17 women develops breast cancer in her lifetime.

I knew I would want to show my support for the 'Wear The Pink Ribbon' campaign again come October! Thus, I went in search for the Pink Ribbon donation box whereby I can get a pretty Pink Ribbon brooch pin just by donating $2. I went in search for the donation box at one of the Watsons stores but to no avail as they did not participate in the campaign this time round, unlike last year. As I was very determined to get it as I also planned to give it to the 2 other ladies in my company. Thus, I called the Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF) hotline, of which the lady who attended my call told me that I can get the pins at all Jean Yip Beauty & Slimming Centres and Tangs departmental stores islandwide. Lucky thing was that there was a Jean Yip branch at the shopping mall I was at, so I headed there.

I got 3 in total - 1 for myself, 2 for the two ladies in my office.

Thought that it would be nice to share my support for this cause with them. :)

And if you realized, there is a new corporate logo for the BCF. As mentioned in the BCF's website, "The new logo comprises two ribbons placed side by side to form a heart, the universal symbol of both male and female. The two ribbons represent the changing relationship dynamics of society today, that information dissemination and moral support for breast cancer are no longer driven by women alone but by men as well. This is why the grey ribbon represents the male and the pink represents the female advocate. By pairing the grey with the pink, BCF is making a bold statement that breast cancer is no longer just about women but that men also play an equally important role in spreading the word".

So, 05 October 2012 marks the first Pink Friday for me!

When I was at Raffles Place on Friday, I saw from a distance away, a Pink Ribbon volunteer whom was wearing a pink T-shirt, carrying the donation box and getting people to support/donate to the Pink Ribbon cause. When I was done with my stuff after an hour plus after and standing by a poster reading it, the same volunteer approached me from the side... My hair was covering the collar pin, but when I saw it was her, I proudly showed my Pink Ribbon to her. And she smiled widely at me and thanked me. In my heart, I should be the one to thank her... Afterall she's the one who sets aside time, standing under the hot sun, and getting people to donate. What I am doing for BCAM is nothing as compared to her. Really.

Keeping your Home Together, with Total Defence.

Defending Singapore is not only through serving the National Service or being in the various forces, but there are other ways in which we can defend Singapore. And we call it Total Defence, where everyone can play a part in keeping Singapore strong on all fronts.




And this year's Total Defence theme, "Home - Keeping It Together" sends a positive message of doing just that as we are the children of our motherland, no matter if we are living in Singapore or abroad. No matter where we are, there are certainly sweet cherished memories and shared dreams of the future that we have for Singapore.


I am sure you have seen the music video (as below) on the local television channels, where 39 local singers were involved in the new version of the song, "Home". The song was originally sung by Kit Chan, and was composed by Dick Lee in 1998. That was like 13 years ago (and I was still in Primary School then mann~). This new version is something refreshing, in my opinion... And something to reignite the sense of home and commitment to defend Singapore, as it is our Home.

Do your part for the people of your HOME!

Yes, and it is very easy! All you need is to do your part in the 'Click for Charity' drive! The aim is to raise $200,000 for the Community Chest, sponsored by 6 private organisations.


Simply head to the campaign website by clicking [HERE] and download the "Home" music video. For every 1 click, it means $1 will be donated to the various charity organisations. So we need 200,000 clicks and EVERY click counts! Attaining the 200,000th click IS possible and we are really close to achieve it! Each time that I refresh the campaign page, the 'click counter' increases by a few thousands each time! I know it will be possible and will be attained very soon, especially if you can play a bigger part in this charity drive by rallying your family and friends to download the video too at this [SITE]. :)

This charity drive closes on 31 March 2011. But you know what, I am sure we will be able to raise $200K really soon! There's the spirit of Social Defence within us, isn't it?

As participants have to write a short description of not more than 150 words, I wrote a short and simple poem. In the poem, I described the loving and supportive family that I am so fortunate to have, as well as what they have taught me - Not only to show my love and concern towards my family and friends, but also to others who are in need of help and concern.

So if you had followed me on Twitter (@felizaong), you'd have known that I was involved in a social community event on Monday, where about 60 volunteers helped to pack and distribute a total of 1540 sponsored grocery bags for needy residents of the Southwest District.

And if you had known me long enough (ie. certain friends), you'd have known that I started doing community work since young. In addition, for the recent few years, though rather sporadic but certainly better than none, I take part in charity events and outings such as the CCF's Tulip Hearts Day, spending afternoons after school at C.Home, group outings with eldely from daycare centre, and my recent donation of my clothes (some new and never worn at all, some worn only a few times) in December 2009 and 2010.

I submitted my entry rather last minute (today at about 5am), and voting closes on 18 June 2010, 5pm. So it was about 36 hours at that time before voting ends. And now, its less than 24 hours! So, anyway, I hope you can vote for me, so as to win a HTC Celebration Pack worth S$1K, and then I will be able to use it to celebrate my win with my loved ones!!!
